What this calculator includes
This calculator estimates the volume of topsoil needed to cover a rectangular area to a chosen added depth. It is useful for lawn renovation, raised beds and grading projects. Soil is often sold by volume, while bagged products are labeled in cubic feet, liters or similar units.
Measurement tips
Measure the actual area receiving new soil and determine the additional depth needed after grading. If you are filling low spots, use an average depth rather than the deepest point. Raised beds should be calculated from their internal dimensions.
Choosing a waste allowance
Loose soil settles after placement, so the delivered volume can shrink. A modest settling allowance is useful, particularly for deeper fills. Soil composition and moisture influence how much settlement occurs.
