What this calculator includes
This calculator estimates the loose gravel volume needed to cover a rectangular area at a chosen depth. It also provides an approximate weight because bulk gravel may be sold by the ton rather than strictly by volume. Actual weight varies with rock type, particle size, moisture and how tightly the material is packed.
Measurement tips
Measure the finished coverage area and the compacted depth you want, not just the depth of the excavation. If the project has curves or multiple zones, break it into rectangles and add them. For a driveway or base course, remember that gravel typically settles and compacts, so loose-delivery volume can be greater than the final compacted volume.
Choosing a waste allowance
Use extra allowance for uneven subgrade, compaction and spreading losses. Five to ten percent can be reasonable for a simple landscape bed; driveways and base layers may require more depending on compaction and grading.
