What this calculator includes
This calculator estimates floor area and then adds a cut-and-waste allowance. If you know how much area one carton covers, it can also estimate whole cartons. It works as a planning tool for plank, laminate, hardwood, vinyl and similar rectangular flooring products.
Measurement tips
Measure each room at its longest length and widest width. Break L-shaped rooms into rectangles and add their areas. Closets, alcoves and connected spaces are easy to miss, so include them if the new flooring will continue through those areas.
Choosing a waste allowance
Waste depends on layout, board length, room shape and pattern. A straightforward plank installation often starts around 5–10% extra, while diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns and rooms with many angles can require more.
Common estimating mistakes
- Rounding room dimensions down too aggressively
- Ignoring closets and doorway transitions
- Using net floor area with no cut allowance
- Dividing by carton coverage and rounding down
