What this calculator includes
This calculator estimates mulch volume from bed length, width and target depth. It is useful for bark mulch, wood chips and similar landscape coverings. The output gives a planning quantity that can be converted into bulk yards or compared with the labeled volume of bagged mulch.
Measurement tips
Measure the planted surface that will actually receive mulch. Exclude patios, stepping stones and large permanent objects if you want a tighter estimate. For beds with curves, split the area into rough rectangles or measure an average width along the bed.
Choosing a waste allowance
Mulch settles after spreading and can be difficult to distribute perfectly, so a modest extra allowance is useful. If you are topping up an existing bed rather than creating a new layer, measure the depth still needed instead of using the total desired finished depth.
