Measure the area that will actually receive gravel
For a rectangular area, multiply length by width. Break irregular spaces into smaller rectangles and add them. If a path curves, use several shorter sections with average widths rather than treating the entire route as one oversized rectangle.
Choose depth based on the project, not the calculator
The calculator does not decide the correct construction depth. Decorative cover, a walking path and a vehicle base can have very different requirements. Use the design, product instructions or local construction guidance to choose the required compacted layers before calculating quantity.
Understand loose depth versus compacted depth
Bulk aggregate can occupy more space when loose than after it is compacted. If your project specification calls for a compacted layer, ask the supplier or installer how much loose material is normally required to achieve that finished depth with the specific aggregate being used.
Volume and weight are related but not interchangeable
A cubic yard or cubic meter is volume; a ton is weight. The weight of the same volume varies with rock type, grading, moisture and void space. BuildQuantify can show an approximate weight for planning, but supplier density for the exact product is more reliable for ordering by ton.
Do not average extreme low spots carelessly
If a base is uneven, one deep depression should not automatically become the assumed depth for the entire area. Either correct the grade first or divide the project into zones with different average depths. This produces a more realistic total than multiplying the maximum depth across the whole site.
Allow for spreading and compaction
Some extra material can cover minor grade variation, compaction and spreading losses. The appropriate allowance depends on the aggregate and construction method. For engineered bases or load-bearing work, follow the specified layer thickness and compaction requirements rather than a generic percentage.
Example: 20 ft × 10 ft at 3 inches
A 20 ft × 10 ft rectangle is 200 sq ft. At 3 inches deep, the theoretical volume is 50 cubic feet, or about 1.85 cubic yards. An allowance increases that planning quantity, and the supplier can convert the final volume into tons using the density of the chosen gravel.
Questions to ask the supplier
Confirm whether the product is sold by cubic yard, cubic meter or ton; ask for typical bulk density; verify delivery minimums; and make sure truck access and dumping location are practical. If the project uses a base layer and a decorative finish layer, estimate the materials separately.

Why can two gravels have different weights for the same volume?
Rock type, particle size, moisture and void space change bulk density, so equal volumes do not necessarily weigh the same.
Should I enter compacted or loose depth?
Enter the depth that matches the quantity you are trying to estimate. If your design specifies compacted depth, ask the supplier how loose delivery volume relates to that finished layer.
Can I use the gravel calculator for crushed stone?
It can estimate geometric volume, but the approximate weight may differ. Use the supplier density for the exact aggregate when weight matters.
