Calculate wall area from the room perimeter
For a rectangular room, add length and width, multiply by two to get the perimeter, then multiply by wall height. This gives gross wall area. The calculator can subtract an estimated area for doors and windows, although very small openings do not always save much paint because cutting-in and touch-up still consume material.
Coat count matters as much as room size
A 350 sq ft wall surface receiving two coats needs about 700 sq ft of rated coverage before extra allowance. Major color changes, patched areas or new drywall can require primer or additional coats. Do not assume one-coat marketing language applies to every surface and color combination.
Use the coverage rate for the actual product
Coverage varies by paint line, sheen and application. Enter the manufacturer rate for the product rather than relying only on a generic default. BuildQuantify uses square feet per gallon in US/Imperial mode and square meters per liter in Metric mode, and it converts entered values when you switch unit systems.
Texture and porosity can reduce coverage
Bare drywall, masonry, rough texture and porous repairs can absorb more coating than a smooth sealed wall. Primer can improve uniformity and reduce uneven absorption. If the surface condition is uncertain, plan conservatively and follow the coating manufacturer’s preparation instructions.
Doors and windows: subtract carefully
Subtracting large openings can improve the estimate, but subtracting every small opening can create false precision. Trim, corners and cut-in work also consume paint. For many ordinary rooms, keeping small openings in the gross area provides a useful buffer.
Allow for trays, rollers and touch-ups
Paint remains in roller covers, brushes, trays and containers, and small repairs may be needed after the room is finished. A modest extra allowance can help, particularly when exact color matching later would be difficult.
Example: 12 ft × 10 ft room
A 12 ft × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls has a perimeter of 44 ft and gross wall area of 352 sq ft. Two coats require 704 sq ft of coverage before subtracting openings or adding extra allowance. At 375 sq ft per gallon, that theoretical coating need is about 1.88 gallons before the other adjustments.
Before buying paint
Confirm coverage, recommended primer, recoat time and surface preparation on the technical label. When tint consistency matters, buying the needed paint together can reduce batch differences. Keep a small labeled amount for future touch-ups if storage conditions allow.
