How the estimate works
Divide total fence length by panel width and round up. For a straight run, posts are generally one more than the number of sections.
Planning example
A 100 ft straight fence using 8 ft panels needs 13 sections when rounded up and typically 14 posts before gates or corners.

This calculator estimates straight-run fence sections and posts using the total fence length and standard panel or bay width. It is intentionally a planning estimate: gates, corners, end posts, terrain changes and custom spacing can all change the final material list.
Measurement tips
Measure along the actual proposed fence line. Mark corners and gate locations before ordering. On sloped ground, panel type matters because some systems step while others rack to follow grade; this can affect spacing and post count.
Choosing a waste allowance
Fence systems are less about percentage waste and more about whole sections, cut panels and special posts. Always round partial sections up, then review each corner, end and gate because those locations may require different hardware or post types.
