ROOFING PLANNING GUIDE

How to Measure a Roof for a Material Estimate

Roof material estimating is more complex than multiplying the building footprint because slope increases surface area and roof shapes can include hips, valleys, dormers and overhangs. BuildQuantify provides a planning estimate for simple roofs, but complex or high-risk roofs should be measured from plans, safe ground-based methods or by a qualified professional.

Do not climb an unsafe roof to get a measurement

A material estimate is not worth a fall. Use building plans, verified ground dimensions, aerial measurement services or a qualified roofer when direct access is unsafe. Steep, wet, damaged or high roofs require appropriate professional safety systems.

Start with the building footprint

For a simple rectangular structure, record building length and width. Roof overhangs extend beyond the wall footprint, so include them when you have reliable dimensions. If the structure has several wings, calculate each footprint section separately.

Pitch increases surface area

A sloped roof surface is larger than its horizontal footprint. The calculator applies a multiplier based on common roof pitches. A higher pitch produces a larger multiplier. This is an approximation for planning and does not replace direct roof-plane measurements on complex geometry.

Complex roofs need plane-by-plane thinking

Hips, valleys, dormers, intersecting gables and additions create multiple roof planes. For these roofs, a single footprint-and-pitch calculation can miss area and cut waste. Measure or obtain the area of each plane and use the roofing manufacturer or contractor’s takeoff method.

Understand roofing squares

In US roofing, one roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. A square is not the same as a bundle. The number of bundles per square depends on the shingle product, so use the packaging information for the exact material.

Waste depends on roof shape

A simple gable roof can use material efficiently, while hips, valleys and dormers create more cuts. Starter strips, ridge caps, underlayment, flashing and ventilation components are also separate from the field-shingle area and should be planned independently.

Example: 1,500 sq ft footprint

A 1,500 sq ft footprint with a moderate pitch has more than 1,500 sq ft of actual roof surface. Applying a pitch multiplier and then a waste allowance can move the planning quantity above 1,700 sq ft. The exact result depends on the selected pitch and project-specific waste.

Before ordering roofing material

Confirm the roof measurement, exact product coverage, bundles per square, starter and ridge requirements, underlayment, flashing and ventilation. For insurance, structural or code-related work, use qualified measurements and local requirements rather than a general web estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What is one roofing square?

One US roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface area.

Does the calculator include roof overhangs?

Only if the length and width you enter include them. For a precise estimate, use actual roof-plane or verified overhang dimensions.

Can I measure a steep roof myself?

Avoid unsafe access. Use plans, ground-based or aerial measurement, or a qualified professional for steep, high or hazardous roofs.
